High potential and gifted education
Some students learn faster and more easily than others. These students may shine in creativity, thinking, leadership or sport.
At our school, we recognise and nurture these strengths early. We support advanced learners with great lessons and activities to help them grow and thrive.
Why choose us for your high potential or gifted child?
Recognising potential and developing talent
Our teachers find potential and nurture our students to be the best they can be.
Tailored lessons
Each student has different abilities. Teachers respond to each student’s ability by providing extra challenges and extension activities to keep learning exciting and engaging.
Rich opportunities and activities
Students can take part in opportunities to develop their talent in the arts, sport, leadership and more.
Opening doors to wider experiences
Our students can participate in a wide range of state-wide opportunities that aim to extend and enrich student potential.
What is high potential and gifted education?
High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.
We do this through:
- effective teaching strategies like enrichment, extension and acceleration
- tailored support during lessons that stretch, challenge and inspire
- access to a wide range of opportunities both within and beyond our school.
Our high potential and gifted education opportunities
Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.
At East Hills Public School, we believe that all students have different kinds of potential. We include High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) in our daily teaching. We focus on regular assessment, evidence-based teaching methods, and adapting lessons to meet each student’s needs. This is guided by explicit teaching through the EHPS Teacher Learning Cycle.
Here are some of the ways we support all students:
Formative Assessment Tools:-
Teachers check for understanding using tests, observation checklists, and student work samples to find out what students do well and where they can improve. This helps teachers plan lessons that support ongoing learning and engagement.
Differentiating Learning Teachers:-
Differentiate learning by tailoring lessons to meet each child’s unique needs, interests, and abilities. This means they use a variety of teaching methods, activities, and materials to help every student understand and be successful in learning at their own pace. Whether a student needs extra support, more challenge, or prefers to learn in a particular way, the teacher adapts the lessons so all children can succeed and feel confident.
High Expectations in Lessons:-
Teachers have high expectations of students by believing in their ability to learn and grow. They encourage children to try their best, set clear goals, and provide support to help them reach those goals. This positive belief helps students build confidence, stay motivated, and achieve their full potential.
At East Hills Public School, High Potential and Gifted Education is an integral part of our core focus. We recognise and nurture the individual talents of every student by offering flexible, diverse, and enriching opportunities that promote growth across academic, creative, social, and physical areas.
Teachers learn more about HPGE through professional learning and work together to share ideas and plan lessons to allow all students to reach their full potential. This helps ensure all students get the best possible support to grow their talents.

Our five Learner Dispositions—being reflective, gritty, curious, collaborative, and taking ownership—help students become confident and independent learners. These qualities encourage them to think deeply, keep trying even when things are tough, ask questions, work well with others, and take responsibility for their own learning. Together, these habits support lifelong success.
